The DC CONSUMER RIGHTS COALITION — Who We are
The DC Consumer Rights Coalition is a group of consumer rights advocates who wish to serve D.C.’s consumers and the D.C.consumer advocate community. We focus on issues of concern to local consumers.
Our mission: The DC Consumer Rights Coalition (DCCRC) advances economic rights and financial inclusion of DC residents through research, education, advocacy, direct service, and community organizing.
DCCRC works with individual consumer advocates, poverty and consumer organizations, and grassroots members to press for policies that protect vulnerable residents. We also educate individuals on consumer issues and consumer rights, advocate for consumer interests, study critical consumer issues, and work to build the consumer movement.
Our Current Developments page puts an emphasis on information likely to be important to local consumers.
We include local news and news of important developments from around the country with local consequences. We focus on developments that suggest the power of our local Attorney General and other local officials and not-for-profit groups to successfully assert consumer interests.

Mark Steinbach is not a member of the Board, but he is a valued advisor with emeritus status.
Mark began his legal career as a Staff Attorney at the Center for Auto Safety, a non-profit consumer and safety advocacy organization in Washington, D.C. There, he successfully sued the federal government to improve highway work-zone safety and used the Federal Advisory Committee Act to open previously closed government meetings to public scrutiny.
Mark's practice has included representing many individual consumers as well as consumer groups such as the Fiero Fire Fighters (organized to help Pontiac Fiero owners whose cars caught on fire) and the Disgruntled Diesel Owners Group (organized to assist many thousands of residents in Maryland and elsewhere who experienced expensive engine and/or transmission problems in the diesel-powered vehicles General Motors produced beginning in 1979 in response to an earlier oil embargo). Representing the Audi Victims Network, Mr. Steinbach lodged a successful challenge to a proposed class action settlement that would have required Audi 5000 owners to purchase expensive new Audi vehicles to obtain any benefits from the settlement.
Mr. Steinbach has been active in promoting consumer education and advocacy through 12 years of service on the Board of Directors of the Maryland Consumer Rights Coalition, serving two terms as President. He also served for 6 years on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Consumer Advocates.
